What is MemberDash?
MemberDash is a membership WordPress plugin offered by LearnDash allowing you to create gated content.
It’s one of the two main products offered by LearnDash to help you build and sell online courses and memberships.
The other popular LearnDash product is the LearnDash LMS plugin, which helps you actually build the online course content and curriculum in your WordPress site.
Once you’ve built that program, you can use MemberDash to put it behind a paywall with different membership tiers.
You can also gate pages, blog posts and any other WordPress type of content using MemberDash.
Features: What can you do with MemberDash?
Now that we understand better how MemberDash can fit into your plugin stack, let’s dive deeper into its features.
Here is a highlight of the different functionalities this tool has:
- WordPress Content gating (Pages, Posts, Categories, Custom Post Type, etc.)
- Membership Tiers
- Members management
- Checkout and payment
- Analytics & Reporting
- Automated purchase emails
- Media protection
Again here, it’s important to understand that MemberDash doesn’t help you create the content that you want to put behind a paywall.
This is what you can create with LearnDash LMS or any other course builder or page builder.
MemberDash helps you manage what content different memberships levels (or tier) get access to after going through your checkout.
This is the first step to create your membership by building out the different memberships or membership tiers.
This can be for different courses or bundles for example and editing the details around their access.
This is also where you can automate giving access to other courses or membership after one specific one ends.
Lastly you’ll also set up the automated system emails people from this membership gets.
Overall this is a fairly simple way to help you create your packages.
Payment & Checkout
The last step is setting up your memberships is to set up the payment system.
MemberDash integrates with two payment gateways: Stripe and Paypal.
You can set up different payment options: one-time, subscription, limited time:
Subscription frequencies are fairly flexible with daily, weekly, monthly or yearly payments.
You can also set up free trials (but not paid ones).
Each Membership will then have a shortcode for the checkout that you can embed on any page of your website.
Note that customization for this checkout is limited, unless you have some advanced coding knowledge.
Protection Rule: Creating Gated Content
Once you’ve created your Membership, you can now define exactly what content/pages each of those get access to.
Again MemberDash doesn’t help you build a course like an LMS would let you put pages behind a paywall.
Setting up these Protection Rules is how you determine what content on the website will only be accessible to certain Memberships.
This is a relatively standard way to do this on WordPress although some competitors offer all of this in one plugin (LMS + page protection).
You can add Pages, Posts, Custom Post Types, Categories, Menu Items, and pretty much anything you want on your WordPress site behind a protection rule.
This works well for people giving access to a private blog or certain tools for instance.
Here are some other features worth mentioning you’ll find inside of MemberDash:
- Billing: A simple menu to find your invoices and payments for your memberships.
- Addons: There are about 25+ addons that you can get separately to supercharge what the plugin can do. From tools integration to email marketing.
- Reporting: This is where you’d be able to download sales reports for a specific date range.
User Experience: Is MemberDash easy to use?
MemberDash used to be sort of part of LearnDash LMS, making it a heavy load.
By separating these tools into two distinct plugins, the company has made this a little easier to learn.
The menus are not overwhelming and fairly self-explanatory now.
Of course, some basic understanding of LMS and WordPress are required but compared to other plugins, MemberDash is rather straightforward.
The customization options overall are satisfactory and strike a good balance between simple and flexible.
The only shortcoming as mentioned earlier might be the lack of native checkout design options.
Pricing: How much is MemberDash?
The pricing for LearnDash plugins have been also simplified and MemberDash has a very straightforward packages structure.
Note that there is no free trial or money-back guarantee:
The only payment option for the plugin is on a yearly basis.
The only thing to select for is the number of licenses you need, most will only need 1 (for 1 site).
Understanding that you will also probably need a proper LMS plugin (like LearnDash LMS) is also something to take into consideration.
But overall, this is a fair price compared to its competition.
You can try a demo site if you want to look behind the curtain before purchasing.
How is the Support & Community for MemberDash?
There are a few ways to get support once you’ve purchased the plugin.
The first way to understand a bit more about the tools is to go through their detailed Documentation.
This should help you solve 90% of problems or questions you have!
After that, you can email support. There is unfortunately no live chat support or other ways to ask the technical team.
Lastly, LearnDash has a fairly active Facebook group of nearly 30k members for its users.
This is a great way to meet with fellow creators and share tips and ask for advice.
Our Overall Rate: 8/10
Community & Support Rating:
MemberDash is a really well put together plugin for building protecting content and definitely in the top 3 on the market.
It’s important to understand that it works best hand in hand with an LMS plugin that actually helps you build a course’s content. (such as LearnDash LMS).
Although there is no free trial you can try a demo version of the tool and get started building today!
